The Palas of earthly delights
A town! A town! More than three people, four cafes and a dog! Palas de Rei prepare yourself, we are hungry for excitement, adventure and mildly amusing history.
The town was on a road before the Visigoths, the lot who fitted in between Roman and the Islamic Conquest, turned up, built a palace and installed King Witza. He was king between 702-710, so just missing out on the collapse of his kingdom. Apparently Witza killed the Duke of Galaica, who was Favila, the father of Reconquest hero, Pelayo. This didn’t stop Pelayo going on to founded the Kingdom of Asturias and kick off the whole Chrisitian Spain thing. Reactionary Monarchism seems to have been on brand as they managed a successful uprising in 1846’s 2nd Carlist War - a rare thing,
Like so many towns the mid 20th century 13000 souls declined across the later part of the century. The town website is the usual mix of the useful and the unique. This is the message from the mayor.
Dear friends
The fast-paced development of new technologies in our society implies new ways of approaching the Public Administration to citizens. In this context, as we are aware of these important challenges, our web page is thought to be a useful tool which may serve as a link of knowledge, guidance and information about our municipality.
June 11, 2011 is the beginning of a new government stage in Palas de Rei, marked by my firm commitment of leading a government management efficiently and effectively, this must be done looking over the resident interests.
Pablo José Taboada Camoira
Mayor of Palas de Rei
We’ve been on the road for a bit. I think it is time for a wash. A Lavandería do Camiño gets 4.1 stars. A month ago, Hans was less than impressed. ‘There is a coin change machine, so when I put in 20 euros, six 1 euros come out and nothing comes out. When I called because he had a phone number, he said he couldn't speak English and just hung up. I'm going to be very rich. I just ate 14 euros.’ The response of the owners was Response from the owner a month ago
Hello Hans. You have to understand that you are in Spain, specifically in Galicia, if you are not able to make yourself understood in Galician or Spanish, we have no obligation to understand you. If you had sent us a WhatsApp, we would have paid you the money or we would have sent someone to solve it. If you don't make the effort to communicate, the fault cannot be ours. In any case, I insist, if you call us or send us a WhatsApp, we will find a way to find a solution. Thank you for your attention.
Enrico was happier. ‘Excellent assistance...even though it was Sunday, they responded and promptly refunded us’
Let’s end with the Albergue Valin Lama. https://alberguevalinlama.es/ A bed is 16 euros a night. They have a cafe and wifi. D AM was very impressed.
My son went on an excursion with the institute, the place was very good, they were great with them.
In my case, my son left the toiletry bag with money forgotten and they were in charge of collecting it and preparing it for the courier company that sent it. They returned everything to us, which my son kept, plus a towel from a colleague that we had not even claimed, because We didn't know. In that process they were in contact with us. Thank you very much for everything, you are lovely.
You are totally recommended as a place and by the people who make up the hostel.
We wish you good luck, all the luck you deserve.
