Day Six: At the gift shop

Day Six: At the gift shop

I adore a good gift shop and who in their right mind doesn’t. Let us not kid ourselves. We aren't here for the authentic experience of the Mediaeval pilgrim. Here, we won’t discover the essence of the 15th century christian in search of the nearest thing to Heaven on earth by approaching the grave of St James. No, we are here for the authentic experience of the modern visitor in search a fridge magnet for that difficult to buy for in-law or piece of trinkery which can gather dust and remind you of happier times.

Now, I for one like a good mug. Football can be your friend here. From Ghent I have one sporting a resplendent Native-American chief - the product of a visit by the Buffalo Bill Circus and its visit to the place. The Bayern Munich was a hurried purchase from the airport as was Malaga’s. Mind you, Malaga’s was because I wanted something to represent the day spent in Malaga thanks to a delayed and diverted flight back from Tenerife at the start of Covid.

The Tienda Regalos El Peregrino is a bit more upmarket - well, less pencil sharpeners and more Catholic Kitsch. Five years a go Jorge gave it five stars. ‘The girl who helped us was Chinese and she was charming, we were looking and we all came out with something because she helped us find what we were looking for.

We don't have a shop in the village. Here is the ex-Post Office and general store. In closed in the year 2000.
