Airports and Tarts

 O Amenal lies ahead of us. A scattering of houses includes the old and renovated as well as the new and perky. The bus stop Google informs me is at its most popular either side of 6pm. We are following the path beaten out for us thanks to Streetview as of January this year. Enjoy the novelty.



Pension Bar Kilometro 15 https://pensionkm15.com/ is, funnily enough, named because it is 15km from Compostela. . Its cafe is open from 7am to 4pm daily and gets an average of 4.1 stars. Three days ago Jose Manuel gave it 4 stars and said ‘I don't give it 5 stars because there was nowhere nearby to eat or have breakfast, otherwise good, good room, very clean’. Carmen reckoned the same but would remove the paintings from the rooms. Crisitina went the full five Great attention. Delicious coffee. And I dropped my coffee and there was no way they could charge me for the second one. Very delicious empanada too,




We haven’t been to a bakery for a while. Alas the Panaderia Amenal has not website. Carmen Rey gave the most recent review. ‘The best bakery in pastries and cakes in Santiago, which I have tasted the best in my life, excellent service and so on, so let's try it.

The Tarta de Santiago Abula comes in 1000g and 700g varieties, KB wrote ‘We went there thinking it was a coffee shop but it is actually a place that makes and sells whole frozen desserts. It looks like an office when you walk inside and these were a few ladies in white coats they were very pleasant and helpful. You can buy a 9 inch , 1 kg desert for 10 euro, easy enough for 6-8 people or if you like big slice 4 people. There is a picture pamphlet with all the choices. We brought the chocolate truffle tart and took it back to hotel, it defrosted in an about 2 hrs and it was absolutely amazing. Highly recommend.’


We are now about to turn sharply north. Like Valladolid, Compostela airport has warped the roads around it and turned then from nature’s true course to get round the runway. I must admit to a soft spot for this sort of road. Especially as they then are allowed to weather and fade as traffic is diverted away. Tomorrow, we do the airport.

  Pina de Ebro has something for everyone who enjoys the architecture of Spanish pueblos.  It has the tiny lanes, on which houses have been rebuilt for generations without a care for the needs of the modern motorist.  We have the pathways which have been tiled over but once were dirt tracks.  We have the modern suburban developments of low rise houses and 80s hopefully aspiring shacks.  First all, however, we have a park. One thing we noticed, especially with a small boy in tow, was the number of parks with interesting play equipment.  This is because, in Spain, people seem to like children.  This does make them a semi-public property and people feel free to indulge them with sweetmeats and pass comments. ‘I think sucking thumbs makes children look ugly’ said one elderly woman.’ My Spanish for ‘well desiccated prune face, no one asked you’ deserted me.  The play equipment is in the Plaza Pilarin Artigas.  Honestly I’ve looked and was giving u...
