A Festive Cheese and a lot of tripe

This is one of those days there is so much to see that we will pass over the Medieval bridge at Ribadiso with hardly a glance and pass Bar Manuel to test Bronwen Campbell’s nine month old claim that this was the best empanada she had ever seen. Aruza has a population of almost 6000. This is the home of the cheese that is known as Arzua-Ulloa. They have a cheese festival, of more, later. It is a soft cheese, made with milk that has a minimum maturation period of six days Its rind is thin and elastic, medium to dark yellow, shiny, clean and smooth. The paste is uniform in colour, between ivory white and pale yellow, and has a shiny appearance.b The Spanish Wiki page recommends it go with honey, quince and virile red wine.

The Festa do Queixo I’m sorry, as previously advertised, we have missed the The Festa do Queixo This being Spain a lot of stuff is going on between 9.30 at night and well passed tow in the morning. Research Scientists have been put on to the task of when do the Spanish actually sleep. https://www.festadoqueixo.org/queixo/ The Festival site has recipes and everything. I recommend you check it out.

As we enter town we will be passing a ferreteria. Does this Iron Mongers have a website? Shouldn’t think so. So many hours can be spent in such as these, buying curved and sharp bits of metal; paella pans and other useful items.

Historically the town had its share of Hunter-gatherers. Bronze Age huts and Romans,. The town website refers to ‘In the year 1587, seeing that the English pirates under the command of Francis Drak threatened to destroy Compostela, the archbishop Juan de Sanclemente y Torquemada ‘ removed religious items so they would not be plundered. They put this down as a key reason why the pilgrim trade declined. The Civil War is also covered thusly ‘This stage of progress is stopped by the military coup commanded by General Franco. The uprising began in Arzúa on July 22, 1936 with a general panic at the fair where several shots were fired. A group of Arzuans loyal to the legitimate government of the Republic tried to reach Curtis to be able to bring ammunition and dynamite to blow up the Gato bridge over the Iso river and prevent the passage of the fascist military under the orders of Captain Saavedra. The insurgents took over the town and the repression began with the murder and torture of many residents. Many teachers are retaliated against and the farmers who acted as interns for the anti-Franco guerrillas suffer imprisonment and torture. At the end of August 1936, the mayor Mr. Juan Vidal was assassinated.’

Lets do lunch. Casa Florencio has a facebook presence, yes I have ‘Liked’ it. https://www.facebook.com/CasaFlorencio/ Six months ago Cayla gave them a single star with no reason. Also six months ago Aberto gave them five and said ‘There are only Tripe and Arzúa Cheese. Delicious

😋!!! …’ Tripe is it as Yolanda said a year ago ‘Delicious tripe with chickpeas’ You can’t beat a good garbanzos.

I think that’s it for the day.
