A Festive Cheese and a lot of tripe

 This is one of those days there is so much to see that we will pass over the Medieval bridge at Ribadiso with hardly a glance and pass Bar Manuel to test Bronwen Campbell’s nine month old claim that this was the best empanada she had ever seen. Aruza has a population of almost 6000. This is the home of the cheese that is known as Arzua-Ulloa. They have a cheese festival, of more, later. It is a soft cheese, made with milk that has a minimum maturation period of six days Its rind is thin and elastic, medium to dark yellow, shiny, clean and smooth. The paste is uniform in colour, between ivory white and pale yellow, and has a shiny appearance.b The Spanish Wiki page recommends it go with honey, quince and virile red wine.

As we enter town we will be passing a ferreteria. Does this Iron Mongers have a website? Shouldn’t think so. So many hours can be spent in such as these, buying curved and sharp bits of metal; paella pans and other useful items.

  Pina de Ebro has something for everyone who enjoys the architecture of Spanish pueblos.  It has the tiny lanes, on which houses have been rebuilt for generations without a care for the needs of the modern motorist.  We have the pathways which have been tiled over but once were dirt tracks.  We have the modern suburban developments of low rise houses and 80s hopefully aspiring shacks.  First all, however, we have a park. One thing we noticed, especially with a small boy in tow, was the number of parks with interesting play equipment.  This is because, in Spain, people seem to like children.  This does make them a semi-public property and people feel free to indulge them with sweetmeats and pass comments. ‘I think sucking thumbs makes children look ugly’ said one elderly woman.’ My Spanish for ‘well desiccated prune face, no one asked you’ deserted me.  The play equipment is in the Plaza Pilarin Artigas.  Honestly I’ve looked and was giving u...
