The narrow way
Once upon a time we got ina car and drove to Ponferrada. As we are going there no spoilers. On the way back we entered El Acebo [ from the west]. A momentary sense of existential dread settled as it was clear we must have missed the road and were now driving illicitly in a pedestrian paved area. This was not the case. The village occupies a small space and the road and even smaller one and no one saw the need for a bypass so suddenly we are in a place where a mule train would tread carefully.
El Acebo is one of those rare places with more written about it on Wiki’s English pages than in its native tongue/ About 50 people live there. It makes a living off pilgrims and their needs. At the village exit there is a modern monument made out of steel to the death of the German cyclist Heinrich Krause, who died here on 13th August 1987. As a result, cyclists are now warned about the winding and steep descent towards Molinaseca. We will go down 271m today - though Google describes it as ‘mostly flat’.
La Casa Rosa offers accommodation. David Chow said, just over a month ago, I had a coke and cake break here on my way to Ponferrada. Nothing to complain on the food there. There are five other places to stay here.
We haven’t looked at taxi services much, didn’t seem write. Well, now is the time. https://www.taximolinasecaluis-8plazas.com/ Luis gets 4.9 stars over 28 reviews. Two months ago Dobby Lee wrote
‘There was a blizzard in the area affected by the typhoon today, and I thought I wouldn't be able to reach Ponferrada on foot after traveling 11km, so I looked for a taxi.
The business card at the cafe cost 28 euros and I found a taxi on Google Maps. Reasonable price for sharing and friendly Mr. Louis
The only non-five star review is a 3er from Daniel Weider. Daniel doesn’t say why but the taxi-men were pleasant and said they would try to do better.
