Maize came to Spain at the end of the 15th century, References to bread made from maize date to 1505. In Northwestern Spain, there were several recurrent crises during the 17th century, due to diseases and rapid demographic growth, maize became a popular crop after 1,630, replacing millet. It is grown much in Asturias.
