St Nicholas’ Eve and not a church to that saint of seasonal fund to be had. There was one near where we came into Burgos. Here are the details https://www.turismocastillayleon.com/en/art-culture-heritage/monuments/churches-chapels/church-san-nicolas
We do have settlement of note to deal with! Carrion de los Condes offers 2000 people to have a chat with. Ok it isn’t the 3500 it had in 1857 but it held onto to over 3000 till 1960.
Apparently this town that did so well out of pilgrims had a Jewish population at one time. It was described as being ‘rich in bread and wine.’ Generally it is stuffed with churches and all those increasing narrow streets which are sweet to walk around while being a tourist and a pain in the bum to live with.
As we are by EL Bar de Pichi we might as call it - it is open till 11pm. I think David Lorrio was taken with the place. He left five stars and said:
This is a 5 star as God intended. The best tortilla we have tasted in all these stages of the Camino. Free sweets, fast, good location in town, clean. Hip Hip Hooray. 2 tortilla skewers, toast, 2 coffees and 1 milk, 8'50. Can you edit more?
Having crossed the river we pass the Monastery of San Zoilo. Apparently the relics of Saint Zolio were brought here in 1075. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Zoilus
It generally flourished on the pilgrim trade. In 1992 it became a hotel. Should you wish it, details are here.
Onwards to the meseta again. At least it will be a bit green for a while.
