The best stationery in all of Ribera Ebro

 We are heading into Alagon. It is one of those Spanish towns where you wonder how they managed to get an ox cart down some streets, let alone cars today.  The town centre is a maze of tiny roads, all crammed with shops and the like.



Alagon has had the usual lot of Pre-Medieval chaps thinking that being near the Ebro was a spiffy place to be, especially if there was a slight rise in the ground. 



In the year 714, Islam arrived in the Ebro Valley , with Alagón being an important town in the Upper Mark of al-Andalus The Caliph Abderramán III slept in its castle on 14th October 935. It all ended in 1118 with the conquest by Alfonso I. The town had Muslims, Jews and Christians.


From the  16th century onwards , the town spread out towards the northeast around Calle Mayor and Plaza Nueva (now Plaza España), encompassing pre-existing neighbourhoods such as San Juan. In the  18th century , the Jesuits built a school, dedicated to San Antonio, on the site of the old Jewish quarter.




The town has generally been on the rise.  Between the 90s and today the population rose from 5500 to 7200.  A lot of this is because of people moving out of Zaragoza in search of larger and cheaper housing.

Jenny Garcia said 3 months ago ‘City Council that wants to close the only animal shelter that has been rescuing for more than 10 years, without giving any type of explanation or alternative. They are going to leave the animals to their fate, which is prohibited, since every city council receives a sum of money for abandoned animals and it is the obligation of each city council to take care of them, now what? They don't let you comment on their social networks because they don't want to show their faces.’

Animals were clearly a big issue at the time.  Marimar opined ‘This town is the one that is going to evict a shelter that has dogs rescued from death and misery from land after more than 10 years? Do you know the animal protection law? Very bad, bad town to even visit or leave 1 euro.’


Even the Five Stars aren’t.  A year ago Manuel wrote ‘I don't understand the closure of the barbecues, I don't see any danger of fire, just people rioting but that is no reason to close them and threaten with fines, what a shame’






Before we head out of town we can pop into the Flash gastro Bar.  https://www.flash-alagon.com/   A month ago Oscar reviewed thusly ‘Through a friend we went to dinner this Saturday. It is a very spacious and cozy bar. I ordered the lamb sandwich and it was very good. I have to mention the waitress Yaisell since she is a very nice and pleasant girl, despite changing several ingredients of the dinner there was no problem in modifying. It's nice to find people with that character. 100% recommended.’



Soon we are out of town, over the railway lines and across the motorway.  The road becomes a track and track turns north and off streetview.

Cows are important, rain is ubiquitous

  We are descending into the route to the coast. It is the point of all this wandering.  It is a bit British in terms of small lanes and odd turns,  We are on one of many of the camino routes for a bit of this.  We will pass one of the many tiny bus shelters on these lanes. I think I got a clue as to the weather when walking into a cafe in Gijon and noticed an umbrella stand.  Gijon gets 955mm of rain a year.  Santiago gets 1855mm.  London only gets 557mm. We will pass nearby Iglesia de San Juan de Castromaior.   I honour Pablo Pardo Lamela who gives it five stars for the reason ‘ Because I live here’.  The church was built in the 16th century on the site of an old fort. It has an 18th century baroque altarpiece.  We are now in Lugo province.  Apparently these devout Christians remember the Celtic god Lugh in this name.
