 South of Santander are several lumps of geography. From here the rivers go east and west; the motorways go east and west and we go east.




Before the we cross the Solia we pass the Punto Limpio Astillero. It is a recycling centre. It gets an average of 2.6 stars.   Three months ago Noelia said ‘There are 3 people there who do nothing, the only thing they do is tell you where you have to leave things. If it is not your job to help the people who go there to throw away a mattress that is heavy and difficult to handle, and all they have to do is give instructions as if they were flight attendants, for that they hire only one person , which are not needed anymore. Or that they help the taxpayers who pay them to deposit their waste there or, even better, that they save us taxpayers unnecessary salaries. As long as we pay one's salary, that's enough.’



We are following the N635.  It goes from Muriedas to Solares.   Muriedas is just by Santander’s airport.  Solares is about 4km from where we are now.  Should you wish to do a Route-66 treatment of it it is going to be a very short song.



The Restaurant Hotel Penacabarga appears as the New Borgia in October 2023s streetview - so maybe it has changed hands.   I clicked on https://hotelcabarga.es/  It said it had been offering fine food since 2016.   The menu included Woo Album #3.  This sounds a sort of Beatles / Skeptics cross over.  The website says Woo Album #3 10.95 €

 We are about to wander off the road and get lost.  While we are getting lost we will pass the Muebles Pladur.  Its six reviews give it 5 stars.  Four years ago Ramon said ‘The best place for plasterboard furniture’

In which a Roman Bridge and a Funeral Parlour are reviewed.

We cross the Rio Porma and into Villarente and Puente Villarente. Cows are important, rain is ubiquitous

  We are descending into the route to the coast. It is the point of all this wandering.  It is a bit British in terms of small lanes and odd turns,  We are on one of many of the camino routes for a bit of this.  We will pass one of the many tiny bus shelters on these lanes. I think I got a clue as to the weather when walking into a cafe in Gijon and noticed an umbrella stand.  Gijon gets 955mm of rain a year.  Santiago gets 1855mm.  London only gets 557mm. We will pass nearby Iglesia de San Juan de Castromaior.   I honour Pablo Pardo Lamela who gives it five stars for the reason ‘ Because I live here’.  The church was built in the 16th century on the site of an old fort. It has an 18th century baroque altarpiece.  We are now in Lugo province.  Apparently these devout Christians remember the Celtic god Lugh in this name.
