8/10 Calamari
Sometimes we just need to walk away from those illusions which make the world a better place but we must be adults and face the truth. If you had thought I spent hours each day planning the route then, alas, I must disburse you. Usually I get one end of the direction strand, move it on 3.6km and plonk it down. Alright, sometimes I wiggle it a bit if something of interest is nearby, but often we go by serendipity - and sometimes by major roads. Today, however, chance has taken us down a curious back way which, I have to be honest, I wouldn’t want to drive.
We are heading down into Puentedeume Being where it is, people has lingered about. There were six hillforts in the commune; the Romans built a road; the Swabians built churches. The French were beastly in the Napoleonic Wars, the Carlists and anti-Carlists were ghastly to each other and bandits were less than kind. Currently half the populace work in the service sector, a quarter in industry and one in twenty are fishers and farmers. The mayor is currently Bernardo Fernandez Pineiro from the PSOE. In 2024 the town returned nine socialists, two from the conservative Popular Party and two from the Galician Nationalist Bloc.
Let us wind down the lanes, through the Plaza de San Roque and the Plaza de la Augusta and into the Trintaedous. You can find it on instagram https://www.instagram.com/trintaedous/?igshid=naqgzw0syazi
Marc Berry wrote this and I think we should let him have his head ‘I live for places like this. The venue decor and ambience was top notch, staff friendly, attentive, helpful, knowledgeable and personable. The food was pretty good, I wouldn't say excellent, but good with reasonable prices. We had a selection of tapas- scallops, pork, and calamari. Ive had better lots of times, but I'd give 10/10 for everything else, and 8/10 for food, so 5☆ it is. Highly recommended’
Let us to the Rio Eume. The Ponte de Pedra, we are told, is open 24 hours and 210 people have rated it. Luis only gives it three stars. He says ‘It lacks lighting at night and it doesn't have a sidewalk all the way, otherwise it's nice’ The first bridge was built in 1380 and lasted until 1864. Apparently it had 78 arches and had a Hospital dedicated to the Holy Spirit on it. A new bridge was opened in 1870 - although it got partially wrecked in 1874. https://pontedeumeturismo.es/puente-de-piedra/
Across the river we are now in Cabanas. We will end from a review put on the railway station - people do leave things in odd places. Ana Ramil Diaz makes you wish you could stay longer.
‘Extraordinary sunsets over the sea and wonderful setting moon. Located one kilometer from the beach and pine forest, and next to the tourist town of Pontedeume with medieval architecture in the central w'eina where the well-known main castle of the house of the counts of Zndrzde is located.’
