Saint John in the sands
We are heading out to San Juan de la Arena [Saint John of the Sand] Why? Well, although we won’t make it to the beach - unless we sneak off at the close of play - we are here for the beach that San Esteban doesn’t have.
We are heading down the SB-3, passed the Castillo de San Martin of which I know nothing and onto the Apartamentos Silvano L’Arena. The general view in recent months is that the people say the hosts are helpful but the place is grubby. Nine months ago Leticia said ‘They hosted us without a reservation, but cleanliness was conspicuous by its absence.Hood dripping oil, furniture full of fingerprints, refrigerator with a smell, living room table with an incredible layer of dust......There is no need to test the cotton, with the socks it is clear....’ Two months ago Nuria ‘We went a year ago and I really don't recommend it, everything was super dirty and the furniture was very old and uncomfortable. They need to give the houses a good facelift. The environment is ideal but it is not in good condition’
San Juan was a fishing village. Much of this was river based, with elvers a speciality. The Fishermen's Guild of San Juan Bautista manage a fish market, established in 1918. The fishermen were busy souls. They rebuilt the church that was damaged during the Civil War. We are a bit late for the fiesta on St John’s day [24th June] and early for the San Telmo do, the last sunday in September.
